#17 – Brianna Haag and Mr. Marina are Fighting Cancer

Episode Summary: Brianna Haag is the founder of The Mr. Marina Competition and she does it all in the name of charity.  In 2008, Brianna found out her Dad had been diagnosed with leukemia.  She made the decision to do something about it.  Brianna connected with the local chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and started fundraising for them.  She was extremely successful and was nominated for the San Francisco Woman of the Year award in 2012.  As part of this award nomination, Brianna launched a 10-week fundraising campaign that included the Mr. Marina Competition.  The event was a huge success and ultimately led to Brianna winning the award for Woman of the Year.  She has put on a Mr. Marina Competition every year since and raised over $500,000 for the LLS.  We talk about some of the funniest moments from all the competitions and I try to find out more about one of her guest judges, Marina Girl Says.

Neighborhood & Favorite Spots: Brianna lives in the “Russian Hill side of Cow Hollow”.  She loves to kick off her day with a run to the Golden Gate Bridge and back.  It’s a perfect 7 mile loop from her apartment and a great way to enjoy the beauty of the neighborhood.  Brianna also loves trying new coffee places and two of her favorites are Saint Frank and Blue Fog Market.  For a glass of wine, she likes Amelie and West Coast Wine & Cheese.  She loves the happy hour at Amelie when you can get any three wines on the menu as a flight.  We also talk about two of my favorite spots to get a drink nearby, Union Larder and Cafe Meuse.  Brianna’s favorite restaurants in San Francisco are Chapeau, Sociale, and Delarosa.

If you had to move away, how would you spend your last day in San Francisco? To start the day, Brianna would take her road bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and do Paradise Loop in Marin.  She loves brunch and would find a fun spot to enjoy that with friends.  Afterwards, Brianna would spend the afternoon in Dolores Park.  She would have a big group dinner with friends, most likely at the back table inside Gamine.  One of the things Brianna loves most about San Francisco is all the great people here.  So she would have a party to end the night and say goodbye to everyone.
